Social business: tourism is more than just for leisure
” While many foreign tourists enjoying their visits to Kratie, I enjoy earning and upgrading my living conditions” said Mr. Yearn.
My name is Yearn and I am now 42 years old. I am married with two children. I was born in a farmer family in a very rural area of Kratie province. Currently, I am a Tuk Tuk (tri-cycle) driver in Kratie town and I run this occupation in close collaboration with Cambodia Rural Development Tours (CRDTours).
I started to run this business in 2010. Before working with CRDTours, I found it so hard to find foreigners to take a tour on my tricycle because I cannot speak English at all, not even an alphabet. What I did was to show them some pictures around Kratie especially dolphin viewing site. If they were happy to see those places, then I got a business. If not, of course I could not do anything to get them on my tuk-tuk. In such condition, I earned about 8-10$ a day. I did not have any dream about my life, but I know this is my family responsibilities and I really love my career because it is legal and safe. I kept smiling every day.
Fortunately, in late 2015 the CRDTours team contacted me to work with them in partnership and I was very happy when I got this invitation. This is a great chance for me to get more foreigner customers. In a day, I get customers from CRDTours 2 or 3 times. Since working with CRDTours team, my life has changed. I have more income to support my family as my daily income has increased up to 15-20$. My family is very happy to see my career improving. Now I can pay my children’s school fee with much more relax.
I would like to thank you very much to Cambodia Rural Development Tours for well cooperation and for providing me with the opportunity to improve my family living condition especially my two lovely children. All the best to all of you!
